How to Modify Pick List Values

Goal

Pick Lists provide a drop-down list of values the user can choose from. Learn how to add, delete and edit pick list values.

Prerequisites:

To modify a Pick List the user must have permissions to access Setup.     

After reading this article you will be able to:

  • Navigate to the object field settings 
  • Add a new pick list Value
  • Modify which values are displayed
  • Reorder pick list values

Attention Users,
Salesforce has two different desktop user interfaces: Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic. This article is designed for Salesforce Classic.

Step One: Navigate to Object Field Settings

Note: In this example we will modify the Source field on the Sales Up object

1. Click Setup

2. Click the dropdown button next to Create

3. Click on Objects

4. Click Sales Up from the objects list

5. Under the Custom Fields & Relationships section click Source

Note: On both steps 4 & 5 click the Labels DO NOT click edit 

Step Two: Adding a New Value

1. In the values category click the New button

2. Type Source Values you wish to add in the text area

3. Select appropriate record type name 

4. Click Save

Note: The created value is automatically active

Step Three: Activate / Deactivate a Value

1. Go to the Inactive Values section and click Activate on the desired value

2. Under the values sections click Deactivate on the desired value

Step Four:  Reorder pick List Values

1. In the values  section click the Reorder button

Note: The values are in the order they will be displayed in the page layout

2. Select the value you wish to move

3. Click the direction button to move the value

4. Click the Save button
